HONEY FOR BURNS

The slight regard at this time paid to the medicinal virtues of honey is an instance of the neglect men show to common objects, whatever their value.

JOHN HILL, M.D. (1759)

Honey is a simple, inexpensive, and natural substance that has been used since ancient times by traditional and folk healers to treat burns. Like honey and wound healing in general, there has been little scientific research done on how honey can heal burns until recently.

What types of burns can honey treat? Superficial burns are limited to the epidermal or top layer of the skin. Partial thickness burns involve damage or problems with deeper structures of the skin, while the term full thickness burns indicates the destruction of all skin layers. Honey has been found to successfully treat the first two burn types.

In mainstream medical circles, there have been two standard treatments for burns. One involves a dressing that is a combination of paraffin-impregnated gauze, which is designed to prevent adherence to the burn, plus an absorbent layer of cotton and wool. The other is the use of silver sulfadiazine (SSD), which is prescribed primarily to fight infection. SSD has been used clinically since 1968 and is considered the “gold standard” for burn treatment by mainstream physicians throughout the world.
